Jesse Luther from Wittmoldt in the administrative district of Plön/Schleswig-Holstein, showed strong nerves in the Young Rider Grand Prix, claiming victory as last competitor in the jump-off in 40.16 seconds. The 19-year-old won the last golden ribbon in a show jumping competition at 2016 Future Champions with the 16-year-old Dutch-bred Lux – Winsconsin-progeny Tibro. Luther, who has only started to compete in the division of young riders in 2016, once again managed to beat his team colleague Theresa Ripke. “I am particularly delighted as otherwise I have never been better than Theresa – I beat her the first time at the Prize of the Best in Warendorf at the end of May,” today’s winner smiled. He had captured the silver medal in Warendorf, ahead of Ripke. The rider from Steinfeld needed 40.66 seconds with her Holstein gelding Calmado by Casall, relegating the third competitor in the final, Megane Moissonier from France with Queffelec Drop to bronze. Fourth finished the Swedish rider Hedda Wallin with Ultima, ahead of Tobias Bemermann from Oyten with Quinturo – both didn’t qualify for the final jump-off because of a time fault in the qualifying round.
Lars Berkemeier, the rider from Münster, claimed victory in the Pony Rider Championships, presented by Performance Sales International GmbH. The 14-year-old rider and his horse Luna S were the only ones of five competitors in total in the jump-off to accomplish a clear round, thus relegating the competitors from France and Ireland to the places two to five. Nina Mallevaey from France and Rexter D´or completed the fastest round, but due to a knock-down, they finished second, followed by the Irish rider Harry Allan with Cassandra Van Het Roelhof, who collected four penalty points, too. Fourth and fifth finished Charlotte Lebas and Sara Brionne who were both competing for France in the jump-off, but who collected 13 and 15 penalty points.
Berkemeier who participated at Future Champions for the first time, did never win something similar important before as here in Hagen today. “There were strong competitors, and the course was quite demanding.” He had started to compete at the beginner show jumping level with his pony Luna S three years ago, now he even hopes to be nominated for the European Championships, Berkemeier admitted. The winner of the Pony Rider Championships was granted another honour today. Riding Master Lutz Merkel who had competed in 54 Nations Cup-events for Germany and who had been German national coach for the pony show jumping riders from 1987 to 2002, donated a special whip for the winner at Future Champions, meant to serve as challenge cup with immediate effect. The meanwhile 79-year-old Merkel was given this whip in 1973 at the Grand Prix of Nizza by the former US actress Grace Kelly. Now Merkel personally handed over his whip to Lars Berkemeier. “This is indeed a great honour,” the winner was doubly pleased.
German dressage riders maintain leading position
Final tests were also held in the two dressage arenas at Future Champions, in the division of young riders and pony riders. The German riders presented again excellent performances, like they already did the previous days, leaving the competitors – with some few exceptions – behind. Semmieke Rothenberger demonstrated in the saddle of her nine-year-old Don Crusador-daughter Dissertation once more her quality. The rider from Bad Homburg presented her new freestyle in the CDIOJ Junior Rider freestyle final, presented by the Liselott and Klaus Rheinberger-Foundation, scoring 79.125%. “It is the first time that we present our new freestyle and I am completely satisfied,” explained the 16-year-old rider who had only received her freestyle music on Thursday. “I have practised the track the last three weeks – it was a debut today in combination with music.“ Hannah Erbe from Krefeld with Carlos (77.417%) and Rebecca Horstmann from Ganderkesee with Friend of mine (74.500%) followed on the next places. The junior riders from Germany outpaced once again Camilla Andersen, Karoline Rohmann and Celine Rorbaek Silfen, who represented Denmark.
The freestyle final of the I-Tour for junior riders, presented by Ascot Reitsportartikel, was again up to German riders, to Luca Michels from Heimbach (75.83%), Maike Mende from Nordwalde (74.625%) and Alexa Westendarp (74.58%) from Wallenhorst – followed by Anne Mette Lyager (72%) from Denmark.
The 14-year-old Tabea Schroer from Bad Homburg, who claimed second place in the qualifier for the final, only just beaten by Inga Katharina Schuster, rode to victory in the Pony Rider CDIOP freestyle final. With a final score of 79.208% in the saddle of Danilo, the judges rewarded her presentation with two points more than the one of Schuster. The rider from Frankfurt scored 79.042% with NK Cyrill. Third place went to Lucie-Anouk Baumgürtel, who rode Massimiliano to 78.333%, relegating the two Danish riders Sara Aagaard Hyrm and Kristian Würtz Green to the following places.
Luna Laabs from Ahlen won the final of the pony rider I-Tour, also a freestyle contest, followed by Katharina Ottenweß from Cappeln and Eilee Henglein from Wassermungenau.
